Rank Badge with Crane

Our Inspiration: Rank badge with a crane (one of a pair)
China, Qing dynasty
Silk, metallic thread on silk; early 18th century
Bequest of William Christian Paul, 1929 30.75.1026
Spectacularly embroidered badges were worn by government officials of China’s Ming (1368–1644) and Qing dynasties (1644–1911). The Qing government generally adopted the earlier Ming system, with the exception of some minor changes in the choice of animals. The mandarin duck represented the seventh civil rank.
