Grasshopper and Iris

Our Inspiration: Grasshopper and Iris
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849)
Woodblock print, ink and color on paper; 9 3/4 x 14 3/16 in.; late 1820s
The Francis Lathrop Collection, Purchase, Frederick C. Hewitt Fund, 1911 JP747
Katsushika Hokusai, one of the world's most creative artists, embodied an extraordinary sensitivity toward the natural world. Though he’s best known for his monumental series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji—which includes his dramatic woodblock print Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave (ca. 1830–32)—Hokusai also produced a number of tranquil nature studies.
