Flourish Chinoiserie 2

Our Inspiration:Wall panel with garden urns
Chinese, for European market
Silk taffeta, painted and printed; late 18th century
Rogers Fund, 1980 1980.120
China produced painted wallpapers and silk wall hangings for export during the 18th century, and the workshops that made these wall coverings may have used the same patterns for both techniques. While painted pictorial wall decorations were entirely new products developed for the European export market—nothing like them was used in domestic Chinese interior decoration—they became closely associated with the invention of the “Chinese room,” an essential feature of European country retreats.
