Woman Fishing

Our Inspiration:A Woman Fishing
Georges Seurat (French, 1859–1891)
Conté crayon, 12 1/8 x 9 3/8 in., 1884
Purchase, Joseph Pulitzer Bequest, 1951; acquired from The Museum of Modern Art, Lillie P. Bliss Collection 55.21.4
Conté crayon was Seurat’s favorite graphic medium—it allowed him to achieve rich, velvety textures and softly blurred contours, for which he became well known. His signature use of the medium resulted in atmospheric drawings with luminosity and tonal harmony.
