Pouches or cases called inrō were crafted to hold small items such as tobacco and medicine. Connected by a cord to sculptural toggles known as netsuke, inrō were designed to hang from the sash of a kimono. This richly decorated inrō is one of many examples bearing elegant nature motifs in The Met collection.
