Our Inspiration:Case (Inrō) with Design of Chrysanthemums

Japan, Edo period (1615–1868)

Black and sprinkled gold lacquer; Ojime: tiger-eye bead;

Netsuke: cluster of masks carved in ivory; 19th century

Rogers Fund, 1913   13.67.63

Pouches or cases called inrō were crafted to hold small items such as tobacco and medicine. Connected by a cord to sculptural toggles known as netsuke, inrō were designed to hang from the sash of a kimono. This richly decorated inrō is one of many examples bearing elegant nature motifs in The Met collection.
