John Macallan Swan (Scottish, 1847–1910)
Pastel, 11 5/16 x 7 3/8 in., 1874–1910
Bequest of Alexandrine Sinsheimer, 1958 59.23.80
Swan’s paintings and sculptures were firmly based on drawings of this sort. After studying at the Royal Academy, École de Beaux Arts, in Paris, and in the studio of Jean-Louis Gérôme, the artist sought instruction in animal anatomy from the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. Swan became known for his depictions of lions, tigers, jaguars, and polar bears that contemporaries praised for their naturalism.
