This Met x Wendover Art Group design is a reproduction of an original work of art in
The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection.

A Classical Landscape with Buildings by a River

Sébastien Bourdon (French, 1616–1671)

Brush and brown wash, heightened with white, over red chalk; 5 7/8 x 7 3/8 in.,

The Port Royal Foundation Inc. Gift, 1984    1984.51.2

A follower of Nicolas Poussin, whose work he studied in Rome, Bourdon was one of the principal exponents of classicism in 17th-century France, and a founding member of the academy. He often went to great lengths to display familiarity with the classical references Poussin had pioneered for painting.
