This Met x Wendover Art Group design draws inspiration from an original work of art in
The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection.
Our inspiration: Paper Wasp; Hairy Caterpillar,
from the Picture Book of Crawling Creatures
Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1754–1806)
Page from woodblock printed book; ink and color on paper;
10 1/2 x 7 7/32 in.; 1788
Rogers Fund, 1918 JP1043
The Picture Book of Crawling Creatures is illustrated with 15 designs of insects and other garden creatures. Published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the poems were selected and introduced by a preface written by the poet and scholar Yadoya no Meshimori, who later became head of the influential Go-gawa poetry group. Several of the top kyōka poets of the day were invited to contribute.
