This Met x Wendover Art Group design draws inspiration from an original work of art in
The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection.
Our inspiration: Magnolia Flowers
Kubo Shunman (Japanese, 1757–1820)
Part of an album of woodblock prints (surimono); ink and color
on paper; 8 5/16 x 7 3/8 in.; 19th century
H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929 JP2310
Primarily known as a literary figure, Kubo Shunman studied painting under Kitao Shigemasa. He was also inspired by Torii Kiyonaga, a famed painter of beauties, or bijin. In addition to
his nikuhitsu ukiyo-e, or painted images of the “floating world,” the artist is well known for his finely designed and produced surimono prints.
