Maine Coast

This Met x Wendover Art Group design is a reproduction of an original work of art in The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection.
Our inspiration: Maine Coast
Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910)
Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in., 1896
Gift of George A. Hearn, in memory of Arthur Hoppock Hearn, 1911 11.116.1
During his final decades, Homer honed the essential themes of his art, steadily and insistently focusing on nature and mortality. His powers of observation were bound to his sense
of impermanence. At Prouts Neck, Maine, he channeled his commitment to realism into representations of the rugged coast and churning ocean across the seasons, in varying
conditions and at different times of day. The expressive quality of his brushwork, particularly in images of fierce weather, conveys the eternity and majesty of the ocean.
